Illustrated with 49 full-page beautiful steel engravings and numerous in-text wood engravings (early American views, including title pages, a frontispiece plate of Niagara Falls, cities and towns, including one of the first images of the City of Cleveland, as well as such rugged natural scenes as Yellowstone Falls, the Smoky Mountains, and Mount Hood. Published in parts. With an additional title page, engraved, to each volume. First published in 48 parts beginning in 1872—afterwards appearing in book form as a two volume set. Actually written by Oliver B. Bunce, the phrasing of the text was laboriously edited and "corrected" by Bryant. Condition: Extremities rubbed, books tight and clean throughout. Some light scuffing/rubbing with most wear to corners and around spine, overall very good and bright with hinges firm. Mild and typical age toning/foxing to the text.
