Description: EXTRA INFOPHOTO SIGNAL BOX NEW STREET STATION BIRMINGHAM THE SIGNAL BOX IS SEEN HERE FROM OVER THE PARAPET OF THE BRIDGE THAT CARRIES HILL STREET OVER THE TRACKS AS THEY EMERGE FROM THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE STATION. IT WAS BUILT IN 1964 TO A DESIGN BY BICKNELL AND HAMILTON IN COLLABORATION WITH R L MOORCRAFT THE REGIONAL ARCHITECT OF LONDON MIDLAND REGION OF BRITISH RAILWAYS. IT RISES FROM A SITE BESIDE THE RAILWAY TRACKS WHICH ARE WELL BELOW STREET LEVEL HERE. THE FLAT ROOF OVERHANGS THE WINDOWS OF THE UPPER STOREY PROVIDING SHADING FROM DIRECT SUNLIGHT. THE SIGNAL BOX WAS LISTED AS A BUILDING OF ARCHITECTURAL AND HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE IN 1995. HISTORIC ENGLAND DESCRIBE IT AS VERY MUCH A 'ONE OFF' CONSTRUCTED ON A VERY DIFFICULT AND CONGESTED SITE. A DRAMATIC BUILDING OF EXCEPTIONAL ARCHITECTURAL QUALITY WITH A STRONGLY SCULPTURAL FORM. THIS IS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF BRUTALISM AN UNCOMPROMISING FORBIDDING STYLE OF ARCHITECTURE WHICH EMERGED IN BRITAIN IN THE 1950S INFORMED BY THE MODERNISM OF CONTINENTAL ARCHITECTS SUCH AS LE CORBUSIER. BRUTALIST BUILDINGS TYPICALLY HAVE BOLD GEOMETRIC DESIGNS WITH VERY LITTLE ORNAMENT AND ARE CONSTRUCTED FROM 'BETON BRUT' RAW CONCRETE ITS TEXTURES DISPLAYED OPENLY WITHOUT ANY ATTEMPT TO CONCEAL THEM BEHIND BRICK OR OTHER TRADITIONAL MATERIALS. SEE THE WEBSITE ARCHITECTURE.COM HERE MUCH OF CENTRAL BIRMINGHAM WAS REBUILT IN THIS STYLE DURING THE 1950S AND 60S. IT WAS NOT POPULAR AND MUCH OF IT HAS SINCE BEEN REBUILT OR THE CONCRETE STRUCTURES HAVE BEEN FACED WITH OTHER MATERIALS SUCH AS THE REFLECTIVE METAL SURFACES INSTALLED ON NEW STREET STATION IN THE 2010S. IT IS PERHAPS EASIER TO APPRECIATE THE ARCHITECTURE OF THIS 'ONE-OFF' NOW THAT IT IS NO LONGER SURROUNDED BY BUILDINGS IN A SIMILAR STYLE. 2019 COPYRIGHT ALAN PAXTON PHOTO PAPER THICKNESS NORMAL PHOTOGRAPH THICKNESS NOTES REF NO APVV_2196 PHOTO SIZE SIZE 6 X 4 inches CONDITION: SOME CROPPING OR WHITE LINES TOP/BOTTOM MAY OCCUR DUE TO PHOTO RATIO WATERMARK IF PRESENT ON THE IMAGE WILL NOT APPEAR ON ITEM SENT TO YOU: NOTES This is a print and supply service for an image that is copyright Alan Paxton obtained from GEOGRAPH and licensed for reuse under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic License MANY OTHER ITEMS ARE BEING ADDED TO MY SHOP DAILY
