He later moved to Paris, where he worked in decorative arts and advertising. During this period, he discovered his talent for oil painting and officially began his painting career in 1943. That same year, Noyer met the renowned Parisian art dealer Emmanuel David, who would go on to promote his work and career. Noyer quickly gained an international reputation for his portraits, but he also painted dreamlike figures set in rural or maritime environments. His compositions, classical in technique yet surreal in concept, were highly acclaimed. In 1947, Noyer held his first solo exhibition at the prestigious Drouant-David Gallery in Paris. Two years later, the gallery consigned twenty of his paintings to an American art dealer for an exhibition in the United States. However, the dealer sold the paintings at cost to cover a gambling debt to Robert Goldstein, the former President of 20th Century Fox. Goldstein, pleased with his acquisition, distributed the artwork to friends, including Samuel Goldwyn, thereby establishing Noyer's name on the West Coast. This incident led to a lifelong friendship between Noyer and Goldstein. In subsequent years, Noyer was commissioned to paint portraits of many celebrities, including Elizabeth Taylor, Dinah Shore, and Jean Wallace. By the 1960s, Noyer shifted his focus from portraiture to painting elegantly stylized, sophisticated, slim, long-limbed women, who became his favorite subject. Throughout his career, Philippe Noyer's art remained distinctive. He seemed to explore every form of modern art without being influenced by any, embracing traditional disciplines with a seemingly effortless grace. His work, modernist yet slightly surrealist, balanced methodological rigor with remarkable freedom in subject matter. The women, monuments, animals, and flowers in his paintings came alive through his realistic brushwork, creating compositions born of his imagination and intellectual or literary reminiscences. Inspired by Noyer's work, Paul Guth wrote a series of prose poems, published in 1951, along with a study of the artist. Thank you for looking! See my eBay store for more art!
