David Roberts, a Scottish painter visited Petra in 1839 during his travels through the Middle East. His detailed lithographs of Petra, created after his return to Britain, became some of the most famous depictions of the ancient city. These works were published in The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia between 1842 and 1849. Roberts' lithographs, based on sketches he made on site, captured Petra’s impressive rock-cut architecture, including the iconic Al-Khazneh (Treasury), tombs, and temples. His works brought widespread attention to Petra, showcasing its grandeur to Western audiences.
