Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare October 8th, 1956 "On Stage" playbill from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the JOHNNY MERCER and GENE de PAUL musical comedy "LI'L ABNER" at the Shubert Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts. (The production would open November 15th, 1956 at the St. James Theatre in New York City and run for 693 performances.) ..... The musical starred EDITH ADAMS and PETER PALMER and featured CHARLOTTE RAE, STUBBY KAYE, HOWARD ST. JOHN, TINA LOUISE ("Ginger" on TV's "Gilligan's Island"), JOE E. MARKS, BERN HOFFMAN, AL NESOR, TED THURSTON, JULIE NEWMAR, WILLIAM LANTEAU and ALBERT LINVILLE (who was replaced out-of-town by STANLEY SIMMONDS) ..... CREDITS: Book by NORMAN PANAMA and MELVIN FRANK based on the characters of AL CAPP; Music by GENE de PAUL; Lyrics by JOHNNY MERCER ("St. Louis Woman", "Top Banana", "Texas L'il Darlin'", "Saratoga", "Li'l Abner"); Sets designed by WILLIAM and JEAN ECKART; Costumes designed by ALVIN COLT; Directed and Choreographed by MICHAEL KIDD; Produced by NORMAN PANAMA, MELVIN FRANK and MICHAEL KIDD ..... DETAILS: The sixteen page playbill measures approx. 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers, bios of each of the leading actors and wonderful vintage advertising, but no cast photos ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "The Way to a Man's Heart" and "Otherwise" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of several names and the date written at the bottom of the title page and light creasing, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
