Description: Peter Gregg Autographed 1976 Camel GT BMW 3.0 CSL # 59 Bumper SIGNED AT THE RACE - LAGUNA SECA CAMEL GT 1976 Peter Gregg was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2000. He won 6 Trans Am races in the 1969 along with the SCCA’s B Sedan National Championship. That was a breakout year of a hugely successful, albeit relatively short, racing career. He was the Trans Am champion in 1973 and 1974. He won the 24 hours at Daytona in 1973 with his partner and friend, Hurley Haywood. He earned that title 3 more times in 1975, 1976 and 1978. The 1976 title was won in the very same car from which the bumper offered here came, BMW 3.0 CSL #59. In the 60’s and 70’s I was a big racing fan following Can-Am, IMSA, and Formula 5000 fairly closely because the track at Laguna Seca next to Monterey CA was nearby and reasonably affordable for a young family with two boys. So, on May 2nd, 1976, all 4 of us went to see the “Monterey Triple Crown” featuring the Camel sponsored 100 mile IMSA grand touring race, the “Camel GT” at Laguna Seca. That year Porsche dominated but Peter Gregg was running a special BMW factory designed version of the BMW Six Coupe intended to conform to the homologation requirements for the European Touring Car Championship. It was designated the BMW 3.0 CSL and was known as the “Batmobile”. The race was terrific and Peter actually finished 2nd but the fun really began afterwards when we made our way down to the pits to watch the crews wrapping up. I spotted the bumper sticking out of a garbage can by Peter’s pit area. My oldest boy was 11 at the time and I thought it would look great hanging from the ceiling in his bedroom. The crews were very accessible in those days and Peter was there helping out. I asked him I could have the bumper and he graciously said yes. But then, he offered to sign it and did exactly that! That was really nice of him. In the upper right of the 4th photo above, you can see #59 lined up in the pit area, probably for an inspection. I have other photos from that day including one of Peter actually signing the bumper. The bumper did, indeed, hang from the ceiling of my son’s bedroom until 1983 when we moved to another home. It has been stored in the attic of that home ever since, now a total of 40 years in storage and 46 years since we acquired it.
