Human presence dates to 9000 BC. The Norte-Chico Civilization flourished there between 3000-1800 BC, followed by the Cupisnique and Chavin Cultures between 1000 and 200 BC. Over the next 1000 years smaller specialized cultures arose including the Nazca, Wari, Chimo and Mochica, followed by the Incas. Between 1438 and 1533, the Incas conquered a large portion of Western South America. In 1532, Pizarro and his Conquistadors defeated the last Inca Emperor, Atahualpa at the Battle of Cujamarca. Peruvian gold and silver provided revenue to the Spanish Crown, but by the 18th century, declining production resulted in more taxes which brought about the revolution and eventual liberation of Peru in 1821. Peru warred with Chile and later Ecuador over territories. Chronic inflation devalued the original currency (the sol) to 1 billionth its original worth in 1991.
