The backing board with the mounted painting is matted and framed under glass in a simple, black-painted wooden frame. This frame is original to the piece. The subject of this charming work of art is a California landscape, with a road that is lined with eucalyptus trees, and mountains beyond. This colorful painting was executed in an impressionist style. The exterior frame dimensions are approximately 10 inches by 10 5/16 inches. The painting itself measures approximately 3 inches by 4 inches. The unpacked weight of this item is 1 pound 2.0 ounces. This would be a wonderful addition to a collection of early California art. Identification This painting is by the listed artist, Percy Gray (1869-1952). Verso, there is a label from the frame shop, Courvoisier of San Francisco. Percy Gray is a listed artist on askART. Per askART, Gray was born in San Francisco. As a child, he realized that he had an artistic gift. He studied at the California School of Design from 1886 to 1888 before beginning a career as a newspaper illustrator. He began working at the New York Journal in 1895. Gray remained in New York until 1906, working as a newspaper artist and studying at the Art Students League and with William Merritt Chase. He went to San Francisco to cover the earthquake and fire, and he remained there. His paintings were exhibited at galleries, and he won a bronze medal for a watercolor at the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition. Gray maintained his studio in San Francisco while residing in Burlingame, California from 1912 to 1923. Then, he moved to Monterey, California, where he lived until 1939, returning again to San Francisco. In 1941, he moved to San Anselmo, in Marin County, where he resided until 1951. Then, he moved once again to San Francisco; his residence there during this period was at the Bohemian Club. He passed away in 1952. Gray painted up until the point of his death. He is best known for his landscape paintings of eucalyptus, cypress, and oak trees, along with poppies and lupines. Gray was a member of the San Francisco Art Association, The Family (San Francisco), Bohemian Club, Sequoia Club, Carmel Art Association, and Society of Western Artists. He exhibited his works widely, and his pieces are in the collections of museums including the Oakland Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Bohemian Club, Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley, Crocker Museum, Stanford Museum, Monterey Peninsula Museum, and Santa Barbara Museum. Condition The painting looks very good, as shown. It has not been removed from its original frame, which is still sealed on the back. The mat and backing boards have some yellowing, discoloration, foxing, and staining, as found. The frame has minor wear and losses to the black paint.
