RR Steam Local Commuter Train Baldwin K-4 4-6-0 PENNSYLVANIA Historical Highlights Locomotive No 5743 was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in its own Juniata Shops at Altoona, Pennsylvania n 1924. Designed specifically for commuter service by PRR Mechanical Engineer William F. Kiesel, it was one of 121 such locomotives that were built for and used extensively in suburban service in the Pittsburgh and New York areas. Ninety these locomotives were built for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and 46 of them were assigned to commuter runs in Pittsburgh. Another 31 were built for the PAR-owned Long Island Rail Road and held down commuter runs on the non-electrified portions that system until 1955. Other units of this type also saw service in Michigan and in the Chicago area. The G-5 was a very dependable workhorse of a locomo tive, although it never seemed to have the glamour or the recognition of other more famous Pennsylvania steam locomotives. Three of these locomotives have been preserved. Locomotive No. 5741 is at the Pennsylvania State Transportation Museum at Strasburg, Pennsylvania. Two of the Long Island G-5s have also been preserved.
