EMPLOYEE PERSONAL FIRST AID KIT The Pennsylvania Railroad (reporting mark PRR, legal name The Pennsylvania Railroad Company, also known as the "Pennsy") was an American Class I railroad that was established in 1846 and was headquartered in Philadelphia. Named for the commonwealth it was established in, by 1882, the Pennsylvania Railroad had become the largest railroad (by traffic and revenue), the largest transportation enterprise, and the largest corporation in the world. Its budget was second only to the U.S. government. Over the years, it acquired, merged with or owned part of at least 800 other rail lines and companies. In 1968, the Pennsylvania Railroad merged with its rival New York Central Railroad and the railroad eventually went by the name of Penn Central Transportation Company, or "Penn Central" for short. The former competitors’ networks integrated poorly with each other, and the railroad filed for bankruptcy within two years. Bankruptcy continued and on April 1, 1976, the railroad gave up its railroad assets, along with the assets of several other failing northeastern railroads, to a new railroad named Consolidated Rail Corporation, or Conrail for short. SEALED FIRST AID PACK The Pennsylvania Railroad was very concerned about the safety of their employees. They promoted safety in many ways. Each division had its own safety supervisor who was responsible to see that all employees were taught all safety rules and that they obeyed them as well. Each employee was issued his own personal copy of the safety rules governing the employee's craft. Also, each employee was issued his very own personal First Aid Kit. It was small, but convenient and included sufficient materials for small personal injuries. The Pennsylvania Railroad had a specific rule governing injuries while on duty, "All injuries must be reported to his supervisor as soon as practicable." The supervisor was then responsible to see that the injury was properly treated and the cause of the injury identified and corrected. This medical First Aid Kit was designed and manufactured by "MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES", a major supplier to industries. Mine Safety Appliances, or MSA Safety Incorporated, is an American manufacturer and supplier of safety equipment designed for use in a variety of hazardous conditions in industries such as construction, the military, fire service, and chemical, oil, and gas production. "MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO." This auction is for a 55+ year old Pennsylvania Railroad Co. issue personal First Aid Kit made by Mine Safety Appliances. It contained bandaids, gauze and iodine necessary to treat minor cuts and injuries. The box was made of strong cardboard and was refillable from company sources as needed. It is about 2 inches, by about 3 inches, by about 4 inches. Condition: This vintage Pennsylvania Railroad issued personal First Aid Kit is about 55+ years old. It contains the medical provisions pictured. It all appears to be in good condition.
