A good read for the gentleman who appreciates the best in footwear: Peal & Co 1565 to 1965 was the premier shoemaker for royalty as well as such notables Fred Astaire, Gary Cooper, Rex Harrison, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Barry Goldwater, Teddy Roosevelt, JFK, Laurence Olivier, Charles Chaplin, and many others. Peal & co was the first to make water resistant shoes to accommodate England’s wet climate. It’s a process that is called Goodyear welting today. The 4-century old British company was purchased by Brooks Brothers in 1965. Under the Peal & Co name, Brooks Brothers marketed shoes under their own name by UK manufacturers such as; Church’s, Crocket & Jones and Chaney & Sons. They also sold classic style shoes in their own name, produced in Italy, Portugal and the US. The main manufacturer of their “Made in USA” line is the reputed Alden Shoes of New England. Brooks Brothers was founded in 1818 and was the primary luxury brand for Wall Street and Hollywood. Brooks Brothers filed for bankruptcy in July of 2000 and was sold in the same year. While it is no longer considered a luxury brand, some stores still have “old stock” luxury shoes in inventory.
