PAVEL LISITSIAN Opera Baritone autographed photograph as Germont in La Traviata

Description: Autographed and inscribed 8" x 10" glossy photograph as Germont Pere in "La Traviata", February 15, 1999. Lisitsian's (1911-2004) father was an Armenia mine worker. The family moved to Leningrad after the Revolution, he studied with Maria Levitskaya at the Rimsky Korsakov Music School and then on to the Leningrad Conservatory where he studied with Zoya Dolskaya graduating in 1932. He made his stage debut as Fiorello in a school production of "Il Barbiere di Siviglia". He made his concert debut in 1935.From 1935 to 1937 the baritone was initially a character baritone of the Maly Opera House in Leningrad graduating to larger roles. He then went to Armenia in 1937 where he was a leading baritone with the Yerevan Opera and Ballet Theatre where he developed 15 parts in Russian, Armenian and Western opera. He was hired for guest appearances at the Bolshoi in 1939 and in 1940 he was given a contract for the Bolshoi Opera which was to become his artistic home for the rest of his career. Lisitsian even more than Sergei Lemeshev had a true Italianate sound and developed into one of the greatest Verdi baritones of his generation. Unlike most of his contemporaries, the news of his exceptional talent as a Verdi baritone in a time of great Verdi baritones reached the West and he was initially allowed to sing in Iron Wall cities like Prague, Budapest and Warsaw. He was eventually released to sing concert engagements throughout the world, where he traveled to Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, the U.S., Canada, and Japan. While on a tour of the U.S. he was quickly hired to sing a performance as Amonasro in "Aida". (The day before Leonard Warren died on stage in "La Forza Del Destino".)He also sung at La Scala. The baritone retired from the Bolshoi in 1967 after singing some 1800 performances and went back to Armenia where he first was a lecturer at the Yerevan Conservatory, becoming opera department director in 1969 and professor of solo singing in 1970.
