A very nice impression with good alignment and no colour loss. Presented in a custom-finished double glass frame by Parsonage Studio; thus one of a kind and Crown stamped by them to verso. The art of Paul Nash revealed the horror of the human side of war; but the aspect most heightened in it was the outrage on Nature, the unnatural, and therefore already in a sense the super-real. This distinction is worth emphasizing because it shows that certain elements which afterwards became predominant in his art were there from the beginning; that they are an innate quality of his vision and not an adopted fashion.The contrast between the "Pond," which is dated 1928, and the "Northern Adven-ture," which belongs to the next year, is at first sight extreme. One painting is a direct composition from Nature; the other apparently an arbitrary construction of the imagination.
