Description: Paul Klee pochoir - Kleines Bildnis (mit 4 schwarzen Vierecken), 1921.The original has a dot above the '1' both in the date [1921] and the number of the work [31]. As per the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern, this work appears to be a rare pochoir - 'an edited photolithograph colored by hand using stencils' produced by the German art dealer J.B. Neumann, who emigrated to New York in the 1920's. The number of copies made is unknown" - however, I have never seen this work before - and needed to access Paul Klee's extensive catalogue raisonne to find it [I believe it was in Volume 6]. There are differences in this version vs the original, beyond the dots over the '1' in the date - the lines which create the black 'box' at the bottom [pants?] are not the same - I would expect that this makes the piece more valuable. When I first approached local museums in NY - experts on Klee, they assumed it could be an original copy made by Klee - however, the Zentrum has the final say. There is a spot - which can be seen in the photographs, and the paper has naturally foxed a bit with age. I would estimate that the pochoir was created in the same decade as the original - the 1920s. This is definitely a rare piece of art. I originally obtained via a seller in NY whom had acquired it at an estate sale. The paper that the image is on measures 9.75 x 8 inches. The image is approximately 4 x 7 inches.
