De Longpre focused exclusively flowers throughout his entire career, and many of his works were reproduced for botanical magazines and seed packages. Born in 1855 in Lyon, France, he was a self-taught artist. Starting at the age of 12, he painted decorative flowers on fans at a factory in Paris. Longpre moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1899, where he lived on an estate provided by Daeida and H.H. Wilcox, the founders of Hollywood. Today, Longpre’s works are in the collections of the Currier Gallery of Art in New Hampshire, the Irvine Museum in California and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He died on June 29, 1911 in Los Angeles, CA.
