Description: Past Patterns PP#0701Late 1850s Pleated Bodice Sewing Pattern This Late 1850s Pleated Bodice pattern is an original Past Patterns design ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Pleated Bodice Pattern was copied from an original garment with the consent of the Human Environment Department at Michigan State University. The unusual feature of these bodices is the armhole shape. The armhole slopes 3” off the shoulder, in the original size, consequently the sleeves have little or no cap. The bodices close left over right, what we would consider masculine today. The bodice pattern was drafted using an 1864 drafting system, patented by a woman, and constructed like the originals. The lady in the yellow dress is wearing a loose-fitting bodice with bishop sleeves. The front closes with covered buttons that match the ribbon trim on the cuffs and flounce and gloves. The bodice is fitted into a waistband with gathering or pleating. The original fabric is an open weave, light weight, silk and cotton. The lady in the plaid dress wears the same bodice but has chosen a fitted bodice with a one piece peg-top sleeve. The front of her bodice fastens with hooks and eyes. The bodice is fitted into a waistband with gathering or pleating. The original fabric is a light weight, soft wool. We do this with the hope that people will start creating and wearing reproductions instead of antique originals. The clothes we wear and that our grandparents wore are part of our cultural history. Just as you would not abuse antiques furniture by cutting off decorative trim, so you should not abuse antique garments by wearing them. Our second goal is that you pick up a little bit of history when you sew the garment. The fit, the cut, the fasteners, the fabric design, just to mention a few things, are part to the technology of the time. Our third goal, in sewing the patterns, is to spark an interest in genealogy and local history. Researching local history is always a rewarding pursuit. SKU 0701 Thanks for looking!
