Description: Past Patterns PP#0566Mid 1890s Mens Yachting Shirt Sewing Pattern for 16 inch Neck This mid 1890s Mens Yachting sewing pattern was originally published by The Demorest Pattern Company. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The earliest reference we can find to a "yachting shirt" was from the May 25, 1872, issue of The Springfield Daily Republican (Massachusetts). The pattern we are offering was advertised in the Demorest Magazine's June 1894 issue (page 500). Originally the pattern was described as "Yachting or tennis shirt. A good model, suitable for any of the materials usually employed for such garments." ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The pattern was produced for a mid 1890s man with a 16" neck. This is the only size for this pattern we offer. There are 5 pieces in this pattern set. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Materials required: 4-1/4 Yds. 27" wide. Yachting and Tennis shirts from this era were made of fabrics such as silk, mercerized cotton, muslin, chambray and percale; they were colored cream white, light tan, light blue, and stripes. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This Gilded era package includes a copy of the Demorest artwork and a descriptor of the package pieces and the finalized garment on the front cover. On the back cover are a discussing on Cutting fabric, notes on seam allowances and Demorest "Directions for Taking Measure." Inside the booklet are two items taken from newspapers of the era. THERE ARE NO INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONSTRUCTION SUPPLIED WITH THIS PATTERN SET. Due to this, we suggest novice garment builders do not purchase this set. The patterns come on 1 36” wide sheet and are hand-drawn, emulating the originals. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Our patterns are printed on 20 lb. white paper and packaged in reusable plastic. We do this with the hope that people will start creating and wearing reproductions instead of antique originals. The clothes we wear and that our grandparents wore are part of our cultural history. Just as you would not abuse antiques furniture by cutting off decorative trim, so you should not abuse antique garments by wearing them. Our second goal is that you pick up a little bit of history when you sew the garment. The fit, the cut, the fasteners, the fabric design, just to mention a few things, are part to the technology of the time. Our third goal, in sewing the patterns, is to spark an interest in genealogy and local history. Researching local history is always a rewarding pursuit. SKU 0566 Thanks for looking!
