Past Patterns 0001 - 1800s Corded Stay Sewing Pattern bust sizes 33-41

Description: Past Patterns PP#0001Corded Stay Patternfrom Federalist Era (1789-1829) Sarah Levitt in her book Victorians Unbuttoned says: "Nearly all women wore stays; they were essential for decency, and to go without them was to risk being considered a 'loose woman'. One also risked looking peculiar, since the popular idea of the female shape was based on the shape created by whalebone and lacing rather than nature." The stay fastens and adjusts in the back with laces. A busk made of wood, like the one pictured, kept the front of the stay straight. The fabric from which the originals were made is undyed fine cotton drill and medium-weight white linen. All sizes require 1-1/8 Yds. of 45 inch wide fabric.See sizing chart in images. We do this with the hope that people will start creating and wearing reproductions instead of antique originals. The clothes we wear and that our grandparents wore are part of our cultural history. Just as you would not abuse antiques furniture by cutting off decorative trim, so you should not abuse antique garments by wearing them. Our second goal is that you pick up a little bit of history when you sew the garment. The fit, the cut, the fasteners, the fabric design, just to mention a few things, are part to the technology of the time. Our third goal, in sewing the patterns, is to spark an interest in genealogy and local history. Researching local history is always a rewarding pursuit. SKU 001 Thanks for looking!
