Description: Pair of signed 19th century deacons benches. Handmade by J. Bachelder & son in W. Waterville Maine between 1873- 1883. (In the early 1870s, manufacturers in the western part of Waterville were unhappy and petitioned that the industrial district be designed as a separate town. On February 26, 1873, the area was incorporated as West Waterville. In 1883, it was renamed Oakland.) From Wikipedia, Oakland Maine. Both of the benches have the makers stamp on each end of the hand contoured seat. The benches have acceptable wear for their age and are still very solid and ready for the next 100 years!
