Description: PAIR OF CHARMING, "OLD GLASS" CLARET STEMS WITH OUTSTANDING, ELABORATELY CUT BASE Completely charming, and so nicely done . . . the foot of the stems is truly exceptional. The style and elaboration of the design suggests an 1880s date. Unsure if these are American or English, but quite fine, in any case. The stems stand 4 1/4" tall, 2" across the top and bottom both. The well of the cup is exceptionally deep at a bit over 2". Extra fine, perfectly colorless and clear blanks boasting a soft, smooth brilliance in shine. The bowls are cut on the lower 2/3 in raised diamond floating above the fluted bottom. Crowning the raised diamond is a chain of criss-crossed triple miters punctured on the vertical by single miters and on the horizontal by radiant stars in octagonal fields. The stem has an extremely well cut hollow diamond knop perched on a very slender, fluted stem. And Oh! The Foot!! Quite something! Radiating miters from the center serve as the hob of an elaborate 12 points star with radiant star filled points. Between the points are 9-bladed fans -- an amazing number of miters in such a tiny space. One stem as a charming air bubble at the bottom of the stem, quite common in these early pieces.
