Description: Diario sagrado, y Kalendario general para todo género de personas, con un compendio de la Vida del Santo de cada día, y su Imagen en curiosas Láminas, siendo los mas Santos Españoles [Sacred Diary, and General Calendar for all kinds of people , with a compendium of the Life of the Saint of each day, and his Image in curious Plates, being the most Spanish Saints] by Pablo Minguet e Yrol In Spanish. 1779 second edition, Imprenta de Blas Roman (Madrid, Spain), 3 x 5 1/2 inches tall leather-covered boards, profusely illustrated with a wood engraving of a Saint by Spanish artist Pablo Minguet for each day of April through June (this is Volume 2 of a 4-volume set), [9], 191 pp. Lacking endpapers, but otherwise complete. A pocket volume which has obviously seen heavy wear and use, and yet remains firmly bound and complete. 2 1/4-inch crack to rear board at top of spine. Covers soiled, rubbed, bumped and edgeworn. Both boards, especially front cover, bowed. Marbled paper to front and rear pastedowns heavily chipped. Lacking front and rear marbled and blank endpapers. Title page is heavily stained, with heavy chipping to the fore edge and small holes to the top and fore edge margins. Slight to moderate staining to a few pages, especially in the beginning of the book. A couple of pages with marginal notations. Otherwise, an excellent reading/reference copy of Volume 2 (of 4) of this exceptionally rare set of illustrated biographies of the saints. The second edition of a book first published in Madrid in 1749, this is Volume 2 of a collection of saints' hagiographies produced by renowned Spanish xylographer (wood-engraver) and chalcographer (copper-engraver) Pablo Minguet e Yrol (flourished 1733-1778). In addition to being a master engraver, Minguet wrote accompanying texts for many books such as this, some produced by his own shop. This volume gives an engraving and brief biography / hagiography of a saint for every day in April, May and June, on their respective feast days. The engravings are remarkably striking, and many of the subjects are less common saints today. Among the saints in this volume: Vincent Ferrer, Anselm, Eusebius, Pope Pius V, Boniface, Archangel Michael and Gabriel, Paschal Baylon, Philip Neri, Boniface, Aloysius Gonzaga, Anthony of Padua, Ferdinand III of Castile, Juan de Ortega, Terenzio of Imola and many more.
