Description: Remains of Lost Empires; Sketches of the Ruins of Palmyra, Nineveh, Babylon, and Persepolis, with Some Notes on India and the Cashmerian Himalayas Author: Myers, P.V.N. Title: Remains of Lost Empires; Sketches of the Ruins of Palmyra, Nineveh, Babylon, and Persepolis, with Some Notes on India and the Cashmerian Himalayas Publication: New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1875 Edition: First edition Description: Hardcover. 8vo. 531, [1], [1]-2 (pages of publisher's advertisements), [2] pp. Red blind-ruled publisher's cloth with gold lettering on the front board and spine. Brown coated endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated with a wood-engraved frontispiece and with several wood-engraved plates and numerous in-text illustrations. Burke and Howe 450-451. Myers was a Professor of History at the University of Cincinnatti. This volume is a compendium of his travels. He records observations and illustrations of Palmyra, an important ancient historical site (which has now been largely destroyed), Damascus, Baghdad, the Tigris river, ruins and the palace in Cashmere, the Taj Mahal, Assyrian and Babylonian archaeological materials, and an examination of British Imperialism in India. Myers also includes his own (wrongly) opinionated section on the West versus the East, and how the Brits impacted Indian landscape and society. Myers' book records a great deal of history from the Near East, from many sights that are now lost or difficult to access. Very Good. A Very Good book with a touch of soiling to the front board and the corners a little bumped.
