Description: This is a polished section of natural Owyhee picture jasper. The piece weighs 1.6 ounces, converted to 226.80 carats. The section measures 3 X 2 X .25 inches at it longest points. I use pieces such as this as a display in my specimen cabinet, If you are so inclined, it is beautiful cabbing material. The rock hounds I purchased this from locally said their father dug this is Oregon, and they are second generation rock collectors. It was told to me that it is getting very difficult to locate sites for rock hounding as most of the sites are worked with excavators, and mining claims limit their access. It is said that this material was found in 1967 by Bruce Markus and Ralph Fulson while they were following wild Mustangs in their V.W. They saw the pretty rock and collected a few hundred pounds. Later they came back and claimed the area. The mine was very isolated and overlooks the Owyhee River. Owyhee picture jasper is pronounced Oh-WAH-hee. Owyhee jasper is another one of the very popular picture jaspers, known for their depictions of mountain or desert scenery, with or without the "blue sky". There are now 6 different varieties that fall under the Owyhee jasper name. Photos were taken with LED lighting. The jasper has been pictured next to a .50 cent piece for size reference.
