Description: this is a wonderful vintage oil on board painting of Owls' Head Harbor located on the coast of Maine - Owls' Head Harbor is about half way up the coast of Maine east of Thomaston on a peninsular sticking way out into the ocean - in good weather, it apparently is a gorgeous place to visit in the summer & fall - the artist, Elice "Mimi" Pieropan (1931 - 2013) was born in Binghamton, N. Y. , but went to high school in Stockbridge, MA - she attended the Univ, of MA in Amherst, MA where she ultimately received a Master of Arts degree Cum Laude - she was married in 1951, & settled down in the rural town of Ashfield, MA (next to Conway, MA where the gifted artist W. Lester Stevens lived) - looking at this painting, I can see where "Mimi" was much influenced by the impressionistic style & scene topics that Lester Stevens painted - in Ashfield, "Mimi" painted landscapes of the surrounding rural towns "plein aire" with her easel & brushes set up outside within eyesight of her subjects - "Mimi" also taught art to students in local high schools as well as Univ. of Mass. adult education classes to students who demonstrated their capable artistic talent - she was a member of the Deerfield Valley Art Assoc. as well as the Rockport Art Assoc. - she was a founding member of the Ashfield (MA) Fall Festival Committee (which still runs every year); & was a co-owner of 11 South Gallery in Bernardston, MA - "Mimi" extended her travels to not only the Rockport, MA area, but, also right up the coast of Maine to where the subject oil painting was created - looking at this beautiful painting of a small section of Owls' Head Harbor, we can immediately see the influence of W. Lester Stevens where the the work was done in a distinctive impressionistic style very much like his to include heavy brush strokes while using a diverse palette of very bold colors to emphasize the scene before the artist as she painted the beach portion in the lower section of the painting was depicted with a varied mixture of shades of beige, red, orange, & off-white, & some green colors juxtaposed against the colors of the beached rowboats which were painted with off-white & gray colors as well as shades of dark blue, black, & red - the ramshackle cottages & fish shacks in the upper part of the painting were done in various shades of beige, brown, gray, purple, & green colors to show the buildings in their weather-beaten condition - the foliage behind the shacks were painted with splotches of green & orange paint to suggest late summer or early fall - the painting itself is in very good vintage condition & measures 18" x 14" sight size - it is greatly enhanced by its original wooden frame with an interior white border - the frame measures 23" x 19" & is in very good condition - the painting is signed by the artist in the lower right corner & on its reverse -
