Description: "Outcast: Stallion of Hawaii" by Harlan Thompson, cover by Millard Sheets. 1957 Doubleday. Stated First Edition (no additional printing detail found). 191 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. According to Pony Mad Book Lovers website ( ), Harlan Thompson "became a successful children's author and was president of P.E.N. in the 1950s. His books were mainly horse/ranching stories of the 'wild stallion helped by boy' scenario. However they are superior to many in this genre, some of them winning awards. As well as writing as Harlan Thompson he also wrote under the name of Stephen Holt." According to the front dust jacket flap, famous artist Millard Sheets, who provided the art for the dust jacket cover, suggested that the author stay at the real Kukaiau ranch in Hawaii to get material for use in this story. The book appears to be uncommon, with very few copies available in typical online sources. The story concerns a mainlander cowboy, raised by a vet, coming to the ranch on the Big Island of Hawaii and working with a horse who maimed his hoof in an accident, trying to make a shoe for the injured hoof. Hawaii is a big part of the story as the hero faces luaus and surf boarding as well as round ups and brandings. The photos are of the actual book on offer. See the photos for additional insight into content and condition of this classic juvenile horse story set on an exotic Hawaiian ranch.
