Description: WELCOME TO OUR ART-MODERNE WINTER CLEARANCE SALE !!! OTTO DIX (1891-1969) AN ORIGINAL GOUACHE PAINTING ON BOARD (An Untitled Portrait Of A Red-Haired Woman, Smoking) Dated on Verso: 1935 SIGNED: DIX(OTTO DIX) (Estimated Value: US$ 35,000 to US$ 45,000+) Now HUGELY REDUCED in our CLEARANCE SALE !!! Wilhelm Heinrich OTTO DIX was a German painter and print-maker, noted for his ruthless and harshly realistic depictions of German society during the Weimar Republic and the brutality of war. Along with George Grosz and Max Beckmann, he is widely considered to be one of the most important artists of the Neue Sachlichkeit. A war veteran himself, haunted by his experiences of WWI, his first great subjects were crippled soldiers, but during the height of his career he also painted NUDES, PROSTITUTES, and often SAVAGELY SATIRICAL portraits of celebrities from Germany's intellectual circles. Otto Dix is one of modern painting's most savage satirists. After many artists had abandoned portraiture for abstraction in the 1910s, Dix returned to the genre and injected sharp caricatures into his depictions of some of the leading lights of German society. His other narrative subjects are remembered for their indictment of corrupt and immoral life in the modern city (Berlin, especially). His work became even darker and more allegorical in the early 1930s, and he became a target of the Nazis. In response, he gradually moved away from social themes, turning to landscape and Christian subjects, and, after serving in the army again during WWII, enjoyed some considerable acclaim in his later years. Otto Dix is now recognized as one of Germany's greatest artists of the 20th century. His work hangs in museums and prestigious collections, worldwide.THE PAINTING A SUPERB PAINTING, executed in water-based GOUACHE PAINTS on a STIFF BOARD that was once the inside of a hard book cover. It may be a paper painting that was later mounted to the board by Dix, or, a paper that was already attached to the board as part of the book-cover when Dix painted it; the paint extends beyond what may be the paper's edges in most places so it is impossible to tell exactly. It depicts a late-middle-aged WOMAN, probably a PROSTITUTE, possibly NUDE. She has a blowsy and world-weary air to her expression. It is in the GERMAN EXPRESSIONIST Dix-style of the 1920s-1930s. It is a very cynical and satirical view of humanity at that time in Germany's history, though perhaps fully-deserving of that DECADENT lost era between the two World Wars. It is a SIGNED, ORIGINAL, EXPRESSIONIST PAINTING, now around 90 YEARS OLD. This is most definitely an ORIGINAL SIGNED PAINTING by hand and NOT a litho, print or copy of any kind. Currently matted and framed, the painting's VIEW-SIZE inside the matte is: 12" x 8 1/8" (30.5 cm x 20.5 cm). The outer-dimensions of the gold and black wood FRAME are: 23 1/2" x 19 3/4" (60 cm x 50 cm). The painting is BRUSH-SIGNED, in the lower-left: DIX. In our photos of the VERSO you can see the book cover backing board, in a dark red, and a collector's old label that has the year 1935 written in red ink with some CIRCULAR STAMPS and typewritten NUMBERS. Probably information written/typed by one of the previous owners. For viewing purposes, we have preserved this label info via a small, clear viewing window on the back of the now re-sealed painting. PLEASE NOTE: Under eBay's rules and regulations we have to sell this original painting as in the manner of, or in the style of Otto Dix, as there were no official or recognized COAs or gallery documents attached when we acquired the work.
