Description: Osvald Eslon (1895-1961) Estonian Napoli Italy Seascape Vesuvius Volcano Oil/Board Up for an auction is vintage c.1940's original oil on masonite board painting by Estonian artist Osvald Johannes Eslon (1895-1961). This vintage 1940's seascape and the coast line of Naples, Italy depiction captures the historical moment of active volcano eruption in mainland Europe in the past 100 years - Vesuvius. It is very well executed employing a sophisticated knowledge of light, color and perspective. The painting in-sight is measuring about 18” (46 cm) by 24” (61 cm), and the frame is measuring 24” (60 cm) by 30” (75 cm). It is signed by the artist lower right. This painting would be a very sound investment and a great addition to any collection. Osvald Johannes Eslon (1895-1961)Born in Tallin, Estonia, Eslon studied art in Munich from 1918-1919 under Adolf Hengel. His first solo exhibition was is 1921 and he latter became a member of the “Estonian Artist Union “ (1923-1928). Eslon became a professor of art education in Munich, 1918-1919 alongside A. Hengeleri who was also his teacher. Refreshed his career in 1926-27 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Italy; studied and painted in Paris, 1929 and in London, 1935. He was also a member of the “New Artists Association” (1930-1940), a group formed by previous members of the “Estonian Artist Union “. In 1944, with the Soviet re-occupation of Estonia, Eslon fled to Sweden, and in 1948 immigrated to Canada where he resided until his death in 1961. Eslon started exhibiting solo from 1921, his work can be found in many public and private collections.
