Description: >Offered here is an old and original 1938-dated WISE POTATO CHIPS vintage store display sign!! Please see all nine photos, as they are an important part of my description. This local "find" and very rare and colorful vintage Wise Foods, Inc. advertising measures approximately 22" x 17" with an easel-back for stand-up display purposes on the reverse. Vivid and bright colors adorn this classic pre-war vintage advertising which features a "housewife" in period dress, with a string tied around her finger as a reminder to "Be sure to buy Wise Potato Chips". The slogan near her hand says: "A Wise Suggestion", accompanied by Wise's iconic "owl" logo. The pictured Wise Potato Chips bag also features two owls; note how all three owls pictured do not yet have the "stylized eye" logo, which would come in later years. In the extreme lower/left corner, there is the sign manufacturer's "fine print" which reads: "Copyright 1938, Wise Delicatessen Co., Berwick, Pa. (Litho in U.S.A.)". Please read the fascinating "History" below about the "delicatessen" reference. Well over 80 years old, this is a tough one, rarely found or offered!! <>History: the Wise Potato Chip Company was founded in Berwick, Pennsylvania by Earl Wise in 1921. They made snacks which sold through retail food outlets in 15 eastern seaboard states, and were best known for its several varieties of potato chips. Earl Wise owned Wise Delicatessen and began making potato chips as a way to make use of his excess potatoes, initially cooking them in his mother's kitchen and then selling them to customers in brown paper bags in his deli. At the time, potato chips were generally kept in glass display cases, or cracker barrels, and then scooped into paper bags for customers. The bags developed grease spots and did not keep the chips fresh for very long; this eventually led to the development of waxed paper bags. Earl Wise's deli chips proved an immediate hit with his customers and soon the delicatessen owner became a regional potato chip mogul! He decided on an owl as a company mascot, a creature reputed to be "wise". The now-stylized eye remains the corporate logo. Mr. Wise had his first delivery truck by 1922, and opened his first production plant in 1925...a mere thirteen years before the date present on this Wise Potato Chip easel-back store display! <>Condition: this vintage store display does exhibit moderate age/handling faults, to include: a few scattered tack holes (hard to see); creasing in lower left corner; scuffs and scratches on both front and back, etc....my photos should tell the rest of the story. The pop-out easel-back portion remains sturdy! The still-vivid colors pop-off the signage! As you can see, the sign simply displays super!!!
