Description: Vintage John Deere Tractor 540 PTO Compressor Tire Air Pump 6886-C This JD PTO air pump was manufactured from the late 1930's through the 60's (as far as I can tell) and was the only pump around on many farms until air compressors became more common. Not only is it a rare collectors item, but it is still very handy on a today's farms because it allows the user to air up tires on equipment and implements without bringing them back to the shop. Small enough to fit in a tractor toolbox, it slides on the 540 PTO shaft and the chain is used to prevent it from rotating with the shaft (often attached to the tractor drawbar).They were designed for use at a low idle and are very capable at what they do. The pump was designed with a leather cup to seal against the walls of the cylinder, which is a very tough part to find today. This unit has been well-maintained and has leather that is conditioned and in good shape (see picture). The rest of the pump is in good condition, has been lightly re-greased, and is easily turned by hand. The original air hose is included, although it has multiple splits in it and would need repair to be used. Instead, the pump has been fitted with a coiled yellow hose, which goes with the John Deere green and makes the pump more convenient. Reasonable offers will be considered.
