Description: An incredible piece of history from probably the most famous/infamous event of the War of 1812. A report from the US House of Representatives regarding the infamous "Burning of Washington" in 1814. It is on a thick, heavy wax coated paper that is very stiff. This makes it very hard to the style of printing used. There are two staples holding the book-like publication together that seem to be more modern. There is a stamp on the report, both front and back. It is from the United States Marine Corps Historical Branch and reads as follows: Property ofHistorical Branch, G-3Headquarters Marine CorpsPlease return to room 3/37. I believe this is an original copy of the report given to John Ross, who was Robert Brown's successor for US Representative for Pennsylvania's 6th District. I have other report's from Robert Brown, one where you can clearly read his name, and two other reports related to that report with his name (but not related to this report), from 1804, regarding expenditures of the USMC. On this report you can clearly see John and what may be the beginning of the R, and given that he was his successor and they were all found together, I am almost positive that is who this is. They are also listed so be sure to check them out. I do believe that this is Mr. Ross's personal copy distributed to him as part of his membership in the Congress at that time and then likely given to the Marine Historical Branch at a later time, probably along with the other reports. This appears to be supporting documents to the original report, and the title page reads as follows: [24]DOCUMENTSACCOMPANYING THEREPORT OF THE COMMITTEEAPPOINTED ON THETWENTY-THIRD OF SEPTEMBER LAST,TO INQUIREINTO THE CAUSES AND PARTICULARSOF THEINVASION OF THE CITY OF WASHINGTONBYTHE BRITISH FORCESINTHE MONTH OF AUGUST, 1814. NOVEMBER 29, 1814.Printed by order of the House of Representatives. WASHINGTON: A. AND G. WAY, PRINTERS. 1814 The rest of the report is just copies of documents and statements used by the committee in the investigation. It is not numbered but I am guessing about 50 pages.
