He was born in Dresden where he later studied art. He continued his art studies in Munich. In 1928 he left Germany, apparently forever. He travelled to different European countries, maybe also to America and Asia. According to some sources he may have seen Japan for the first time before world war II. During this period of travelling around the world, Willy Seiler could apparently make a living with his art works. After the end of world war II Willy Seiler settled in Japan. He produced etchings, created a kind of "Japanese" folk dolls, and sold his creations to the members of the American occupation forces in Japan.
