Description: ORIGINAL Etching by Alphonse LEGROS (1837 - 1911). Peasant Women from near Boulogne, France Lovely clean print same frame size and style as the William Strang etchings I have here for sale also. Collection from Stratford Upon Avon or can be posted Alphonse Legros (1937 - 1911) is one of the leading French printmakers of the late 19th century. He was a painter, sculptor, and printmaker, who had a profound and lasting influence on young artists in the UK - through his position as a teacher at the Slade School of Art. Legros was a leading member of the etching revival in France, and at the Slade introduced an etching class. He was an excellent draftsman and played a prominent role in revitalizing British drawing and printmaking at the beginning of the 20th century. This fine etching ("Paysannes des environs de Boulogne") by Legros dates to 1873. It shows three pious peasant women seated together in contemplation and prayer. They are shown wearing their local dress with distinctive bonnets and capes. The artist's fascination with rural life and peasants is clearly revealed in this sensitive print.
