In 1892, Aristide Bruant was invited to Les Ambassadeurs, one of the café-concerts on the Champs-Elysées. Toulouse-Lautrec captures the massive three-quarter silhouette of the chansonnier, standing out against a brightly colored background, wearing his wide-brimmed hat, and his emblematic attributes, the red scarf and the stick that serves as his cane. (Source: Toulouse Lautrec Museum). Aristide Bruant was a versatile artist, known for being a singer, composer, actor, writer and cabaret owner. He bought the "Le Mirliton" cabaret in 1892 and turned it into a popular place of entertainment in Montmartre. The poster testifies to the effervescence of nightlife and culture in Montmartre at the end of the 19th century. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a late 19th century French artist, born in 1864 in Albi, southwestern France, and who died in 1901 at the age of just 36. Toulouse-Lautrec was fascinated by the bustling nightlife of Paris, especially the cabarets, theaters and brothels. He frequented places such as the Moulin Rouge, the Divan Japonais and Le Chat Noir, where he found an abundance of subjects for his art. He became known for his innovative advertising posters, designed to promote entertainment venues and artists of the time, as well as for his many paintings and drawings depicting cabaret dancers, circus performers, prostitutes and scenes of Parisian life.
