This hand colored aquatint after a painting by Ambroise Louis Garneray was engraved by Sigismond Himely around 1835-1840. It features a tumultuous scene where figures in two paddle boats attempt to spear a whale while maintaining their balance in the rocky waves. Garneray’s images of whaling scenes are forever immortalized through their mentioning in Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick” (Chapter 56). The work is matted and framed behind glass. Size: 17 inches tall by 22 inches wide (sheet by sight) 25 inches tall by 31 inches wide (frame) Provenance: Private collection; Acquired from the above Condition: Toning to sheet.
