This hand colored aquatint after a painting by Ambroise Louis Garneray was engraved by Sigismond Himely around 1835-1840. It features a tumultuous scene where figures in two paddle boats attempt to spear a whale while maintaining their balance in the rocky waves. Garneray’s images of whaling scenes are forever immortalized through their mentioning in Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick” (Chapter 56). The work is matted and framed behind glass.
