Description: About this work: “The Beginning, 1974” by Michiel Gloeckner (American, 1915-1989) A wonderful example of Gloeckner’s mature, later works, which feature a highly refined, balanced abstract, geometric style derived from natural forms. This particular work explores a juxtaposition of pastel and bold colors and rounded and hard edged shapes. The work is oil on canvas and is housed in a beautiful gilt frame. It is signed/inscribed with the title and date on the stretcher. Size: 24 inches tall by 18 inches wide (painting) 29 inches tall by 23 inches wide by 1.5 inches deep (frame) Provenance: Private collection, CT; Acquired from the above About the artist: Michiel Theobald Gloeckner was born in Dresden, Germany in 1915. The son of a well-known art collector, he graduated from the University of Dresden with a degree in mathematics and art history. He received a degree from the Royal Academy of Dresden where he studied under Otto Dix. Paul Klee also influenced Gloeckner's work. After WWII Gloeckner moved to New York City. He continued to maintain a studio in New York at 115 East 70th Street, even after he moved to West Cornwall, Connecticut where he spent the later years of his life. His work can be found in collections of The Munich Museum of Modern Art, The Allentown Art Museum, and The Museum of Modern Art, Stockholm. He exhibited at various museums and galleries including The Wadsworth Atheneum in 1960, The Baltimore Museum of Fine Arts, The Munich Museum of Modern Art, and The United Nations, Geneva, as well as World House Galleries, NY Galerie 5, Paris and Galarie, Munich. Condition: Very good overall condition. Some light surface accretions and minor marks/surface scratches. Faint stretcher marks and scattered stable surface craquelure commensurate with age. Gilt frame with scattered losses and touch up to gilding. It is ready to be displayed and enjoyed! This work will be carefully packed and shipped with insurance and signature confirmation.
