The state originally had had five capital cities, and in 1900, twelve years after this map was printed, Providence became the sole capital. Among the other named named places and features are Plymouth, Nantucket, Salem, Worcester, Springfield, Fitchburg, Lowell, Greenfield, Barnstable, New Bedford, Cape Cod, Kingston, Bristol, East Greenwich, Massachusetts Bay, Cambridge,Cape Cod Bay, Bolton, Nantucket Sound, Winchester, Martha’s Vineyard, North Adams, Block Island, Revere, the Housatonic Mountains, and more. There is an inset of the city of Boston and the surrounding area. The image area measures 32.2 x 23.5 cm [12¾" x 9¼"], and longitude is measured from Greenwich and Washington. The map was issued in the 9th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, in 1888. Condition: It is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no rips, tears, or writing. There is a center fold, as issued, and the map is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.
