Description: Original 1860 antique color tinted lithograph showing an Indian fishing camp on the Columbia River at the Dalles, printed more than 160 years ago. This view includes a small group of Indians, a dog, a couple of tents, and a canoe, with mesas and mountains in the distance. One Indian carries a long fishing spear. Salmon that had previously been caught are laid out to dry and hang from a rod in front of one of the huts. The view was drawn by John Mix Stanley, noted mid-19th century Indian painter and survey artist. In 1853 he became the official artist for the Isaac I. Stevens expedition for the northern railway survey, and this lithograph of his original painting was published by the U.S. Congress in Reports of Explorations and Surveys, to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, circa 1860. The lithography is by Sarony, Major & Knapp, 449 Broadway, New York, and this view is identified as Plate XLIII, from the General Report, U.S.P.R.R. Surveys β 47th & 49th Parallels. The Pacific Railroad Surveys (1853β1855) were a series of explorations of the American West to explore possible routes for a transcontinental railroad across North America. The expeditions included surveyors, scientists, and artists and resulted in an immense body of data, constituting probably the most important single contemporary source of knowledge on Western geography and history. Condition: This lithograph is in very good condition, bright and clean, with generous margins and no rips, tears, or foxing. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. This is an original, authentic antique tinted lithograph, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. The image area measures 15.4 x 23.5 cm [6" x 9ΒΌ"], on a larger sheet of heavy paper, with good margins all around. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. It would make a very attractive display in your den or office, and we'll include our helpful framing tips for your reference. It would also make a perfect gift. Buy with confidence!
