Description: A Japanese woodblock printed map of Tokyo, Saitama Prefecture with Kawasaki city and Yokohama of Kanagawa prefecture. The map is titled "Whole (Entire) Map of Musashi County". Musashi is the Edo era name for the above mentioned locations. (Tokyo, Saitama prefecture with a part of Kanagawa Prefecture) This would have been a very large woodblock carving. All the kanji place names are about 1/8th of an inch in size and are readable. (Incredible carving) It is a very clear, readable map and in very good condition. In the boxes are listed places to see, especially temples. In one of the boxes the date is listed as "Ansei 3 (1856)" The paper is hand made Japanese washi paper. The last photos show this was made of 16 sheets of washi paper attached to each other. One of the benefits of old washi paper is the older it gets the softer it becomes. Modern paper becomes brittle depending on the amount of acid used in making the paper. No acid was used in making Japanese washi. This map folds out like soft cotton. It's 50 1/2 x 44 inches.
