Original 1853 Coast Survey Map ALDEN'S ROCK Cape Elizabeth Light Portland Maine

Description: Original antique lithographed United States Coast Survey map of Alden's Rock, a treacherous ledge off the shore of Cape Elizabeth, on the approach to Portland Harbor, printed more than 160 years ago. The image area measures 30.6 x 25.4 cm [12" x 10"], and the map is drawn on a scale of 1:1,000. It shows soundings and gives bearings and distances for three lights: Cape Elizabeth (East Light), Portland, and Wood Island. It also locates two buoys. It was published in Report of the Superintendent of the Coast Survey, Showing the Progress of the Survey during the Year 1853, printed by Robert Armstrong, Washington, D.C., in 1854. Condition: This map is in very good condition, with a horizontal fold, as issued, and no marks, rips, or tears. It is printed on a lightweight paper, typical of mid-19th century government publications, and it is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. The scan below gives a closer look at the title area: Ten years after this map was printed, the area depicted was the scene of a tragic shipwreck: On February 4, 1864, the steamer Bohemian, bound for Portland from Liverpool, England, struck the ledge at Alden's Rock, ripping a gash in the hull. Withing an hour-and-a-half, the Bohemian sank. Two crew members and a total of forty passengers, all Irish immigrants from the ship's lower steerage, perished. Buy with confidence! We will ship your map carefully rolled in a sturdy cardboard tube. We are pleased to offer it with our unconditional, money-back guarantee. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
