Description: Six charts on one sheet showing the routes and discoveries of three explorers in the waters north of Australia: William Dampier, Lieutenant James Cook, and Captain Philip Carteret. The main chart is titled "Carte des Découvertes du Capitaine Carteret, dans la Nouvelle Bretagne, avec une partie du passage du Capitaine Cook par le détroit de l Endéavour, et les découvertes du Capitaine Dampierre dans ces parages." It shows the discoveries of Carteret in New Britain, a section of Cook's passage through the Endeavour Strait, and the discoveries of Dampier. Above the main chart there's a compass rose and five smaller maps showing the Bay of Bonthain, south Sulawesi; the South coast of Mindanao; a dangerous sand bank; Joseph Freewill Islands, New Guinea; and New Ireland, Papua New Guinea. They are titled "Baie de Bonthain dans l'Isle des Célebes / Côte Sud de Mindanao / Banc de Sable Dangereux / Isles de Joseph Freewill / Nouvelle Irlande." The overall image area measures 23.5 x 34.2 cm [9¼" x 13½"]. This map was drawn by Rigobert Bonne, Ingénieur Hydrographie de la Marine and engraved by Gaspard André. It was published in Paris, 1780. Condition: It is in excellent condition, with a vertical center fold, as issued, and no marks, rips, or tears. It is blank on the back with no printing on the reverse side.
