Description: SUPERB LATIN AMERICAN LITHOGRAPH BY THE URUGUAY-BORN ARTIST JORGE DUMAS Dumas, Jorge. "MUSICAL #4": AN ORIGINAL SIGNED LITHOGRAPH, TITLED AND DATED BY THE ARTIST. 1969. A superb powerful black & white lithograph on 20 inch high by 26 inch wide heavy creamy art paper. The image depicts a Latin-American family, with native Indian features, playing musical instruments. The man stands at center, playing a wind instrument as his wife, seated at right of the image, strums a mandolin. Her daughter, at left, holds a dish out in her right hand in which to collect donations. Signed "Jorge Dumas" in pencil at lower right and dated "'69". An "Artist Proof", so stated at lower left, titled "Musical #4" in pencil under the center of the image. Slightly creased at the corners and edges with some minor soiling and a tiny tear to the left edge. A rich and powerfully evocative image. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1928, the Latin-American artist Jorge Dumas studied at the "Taller Toras Garcia" and first exhibited his work with the Hungarian sculptor Anthony Khun in Sao Paolo, Brazil in 1946. Traveling through South America in the 1940's and 50's, he worked as a set designer, a newspaper illustrator (particularly for "El Labraso") and taught drawing and geometry. In 1959 or early 1960, he traveled to the United States and, with Carlos Paez, painted a mural at the Pan American Union Building in Washington, D.C. Traveling through Europe in the 70's, he returned to New York to open his own studio where he printed his own work as well as those of such well known artists as Peter Max, Romare Bearden, Salvador Dali, Agam, Erte, Peter Hurd, and many other major artists of the period. His work is represented in the permanent collections of many institutions throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America. N.B.: This item will be shipped loosely rolled in a tube!
