Description: A watercolor painting by the French artist, Eugène Ladreyt (1832-1898). This original work is a depiction of a standing Chinese gentleman in traditional dress of the period. It is painted on laid paper and measures 8 x 5 3/4 inches, with mat and frame it is 15 1/4 x 12 3/4 inches. Painting has a couple of spots, otherwise it is in excellent condition and it is nicely framed, floated on grey/green wove paper within a handmade French mat (has minor foxing) in a good antique frame. Eugène Ladreyt (1832-1898) was a 19th century French illustrator, caricaturist, sculptor and ceramist. Born in Sauzet to a family of grocers, Ladreyt was passionate about drawing from his early childhood. His parents were opposed to any artistic career, so he enlisted in the army before working for a railway company in Paris. A self-taught artist, Ladreyt began to publish his works in 1859. The following year, he produced several amusing drawings for the Le Journal and thus began his collaboration with numerous newspapers and satirical magazines such as Le Sifflet, La Revue Comique, L'Éclipse, Le Grelot and the Geneva based, Le Guguss. From 1876, he gradually abandoned drawing in favor of sculpture but remained faithful to scenes of manners and humorous compositions. He thus produced a large number of statuettes and groups in polychrome terracotta, of which he gave several copies to the museum of Valence and to that of Montélimar. His work earned him an honorable mention at the 1878 World's Fair and a silver medal at that of 1885, as well as the Academy Officer's Palms in 1890. Eugène Ladreyt died in Paris on March 28, 1898 at his home at on Boulevard Voltaire.
