Cape Hatteras National Seashore preserved a 30K acre section of the Outer Banks barrier islands, starting in 1953. It stretches for 70 miles and includes recreation, wildlife, history, lighthouses and shipwrecks. There are three visitor's centers. The 75' Ocracoke Light was built in 1823 and restored in 2009-2010. Visitors can enter the base of the lighthouse in the summer, but the lantern room and 4th order Fresnel lens are not accessible to the public.
