A limited operation was set in motion to punch a small hole in the enemy defences, starting on July 25th, 1944. It was called Operation Cobra, and it would become one of the greatest offensives in all of military history. In the 60 days following the launch of the operation, the Allies – commanded by Dwight Eisenhower and led by men such as the irascible general George Patton and General Omar Bradley – attacked the enemy relentlessly. What began as a desperate attempt to break a stalemate turned into an unstoppable armoured juggernaut that swept the Germans out of virtually all of France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Here is a penetrating account of that incredible feat of military skill, bravery, and daring that changed the course of the war, and signalled the end of Germany’s domination of Europe.I purchased this book new when originally published but only got around to reading earlier this year, only read once. It is a well-presented account of the period immediately before, during and after the breakthrough of Allied troops in Normandy and is full of facts and details; including in an appendix all the US units involved. The only area I feel the book is let down is the descriptive text on a few of the photographs; the photograph of the Mark VI “Tiger” tank is easily identifiable as a Mark IV Ausf F2 or G (a schoolboy error), the photograph of the German troops supposedly just captured by GIs appears to be a German infantry unit on field exercises by their relaxed poses; plus not a steel helmet in sight – all in field caps and clean boots and carrying entrenching tools and bayonets! In another photograph GIs are described carrying the M1 carbine; they are carrying the M1 Garand. This 2004 edition United States paperback is in very good overall condition although there are some signs of wear to the cover in the form of bumps and knocks to the edges and corners (see photograph). All pages are present, secure, and free from tears, creases, and significant marks. The book runs to 292 pages (18cm x 11cm) plus an additional 8 pages of photographs.
