Description: Are you into natural gardening, or know someone who is? Looking for a unique way to display your succulents in their native habitat? These are NOT generic photos - this is the actual rock you will receive when ordering! And all orders are shipped within one business day, cost included! Also known as "scoria" or "cinder", it was hand-picked directly from the Springerville Volcanic Field, near the White Mountains of east-central Arizona. At roughly 8" across its base and standing right at 6" tall, this red / reddish-brown lava rock has several large cracks, crevices and holes in its surface, along with pockmarks in a variety of shapes and sizes. You'll also see a few natural ledges (Spokesmodel Woody is sitting on one in the 2nd photo). Combined, these features would make it an ideal planter ... perfect for small succulents, air plants, or certain varieties of epiphytics. Scoria's most recognizable feature are the pockmarks appearing all along the surface. When they were first expelled from volcanoes that were active here over a half million years ago, hot gases were captured within the molten lava and trapped as it cooled, leaving thousands of tiny "pores" within the rock itself. These pores offer natural benefits that help certain varieties of succulents to even thrive compared to other planting methods. They allow air to pass to their shallow roots, while retaining moisture as water easily drains. Their native roughness offers a place for plants to grab hold and take root, too (it even promotes greater root growth and expansion). And the rock surface retains heat long after the sun sets, offering natural protection. At Arizona Lava Rocks, we don't take you for granite! Each of our rocks are individually gathered. This one was picked off the ground because something about it caught our eye. Again, this listing is for the specific rock you see in the accompanying photos.
