On the Scheldt 1912 Signed Etching Douglas Ion Smart aft Clarkson Stanfield

Description: An original signed etching by Douglas Ion Smart (1879-1970) after a famous painting by Frederick Clarkson Stanfield (1793-1867). From a small collection of works by Ion Smart that I am offering for sale. It is an atmospheric view of three people in a small, rather laden, boat. One man is pulling in the anchor as they pass a headland where a windmill can be seen. More boats in the distance, all under a stormy sky. The title of the picture is 'View on the Scheldt'. The river Scheldt was a favourite locality for Dutch marine painters for centuries. It runs from Northern France, through Belgium and into the North Sea. This is a scene near the mouth of the river. This etching was published in 1912 by W A Howell of Theobalds Road, London. This time is often referred to as the etching revival period as there was a huge re-awakening of interest in the artform which requires both technical expertise and artistic skill. Signed by the artist in the lower right margin of the print. In excellent condition and well presented with a white card mount within a complementary coloured blue wood frame with inner gilt edge. Both the mount and the frame are in excellent condition. Measures 31 x 35cm including the frame, the image only is 17 x 23cm. Postage £6 to mainland UK. £20 to mainland Europe and £40 to the USA. Douglas Ion Smith was a painter and printmaker. He was born in London, the son of painter Charles Ion Smith and studied at the Royal College of Art with Sir Frank Short. Best known for his Continental landscapes he exhibited widely, including with the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Royal Society of Painter- Etchers and Engravers, the Fine Art Society, Cooling Galleries and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.Examples of his work are held in many institutional collections such as the V&A, the Ashmolean, the British Museum and the Fitzwilliam Museum.
