Jean Sturm, or Johannes Sturm also known from a Latin version of his first name: Ioannes Sturmius, born in Schleiden, then in the Duchy of Luxembourg, itself part of the Spanish Netherlands, on October 1, 1507 and died in Strasbourg on the 3 Mars 1589, is a Protestant scholar and teacher. He is considered the founder of the University of Strasbourg, the origins of which date back to the Gymnase Jean-Sturm which he founded in 1538 in Strasbourg. The place quickly became a European reference in terms of humanist pedagogy. The Gymnasium was the origin of the Protestant Academy (1566), which would soon become the University of Strasbourg in 1621. It is considered to be the birth certificate of the Faculty of Protestant Theology of Strasbourg.
