Description: Here is a 1909 photo of a man sitting on I think a tree limb next to a creek or pond. He is wearing a suit and tie and sporting a mustache, and I believe a beard. The photo is a real photo postcard and on the back he wrote: Dear Bro: 161 3/4 lbs. High water mark. Love to all Lee. It is addressed to Rev. J. Zimmerman, D.D. LL D Syracuse, N. Y. The postmark is August 27, 1909, I can't read the town it was postmarked at. I did some research and found Rev. Jeremiah Zimmerman living in Syracuse, NY. He was born in 1848 in Maryland and died in 1937 in Syracuse, he is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, in Syracuse. He was a clergyman. author, archeologist, lecturer, son of Henry and Leah Zimmerman. Graduated at Pa. College, Gettysburg, 1873, and from Gettysburg Theological Seminary in 1876. D.D., 1896, from Pa. College and also from Wittenburg Coll. and from Susquehanna Univ.; LL.D. 1902, from Pa. Coll. and L.H.D. 1908, from Susquehanna. He spent five years in foreign travel for study, including a trip of 28 months around the world when he lectured many times in the leading cities of the Hawaiian Islands, Japan, Korea, China, India, etc. For 25 years he was the pastor of the First Lutheran Church of Syracuse, N. Y. and resigned in order to travel at will and to devote himself to literary and educational work. He was president of the Federation of Churches and Christian workers of the State of N. Y. He had a remarkable library of 5,000 vols. of scholarly works on various departments of scientific research. Author: "Spain and Her People." Address: 107 S. Avenue, Syracuse, N. Y. His brother, the Rev. Dr. Leander Zimmerman, the man in the photo, was the founding pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in South Baltimore. He founded the church shortly after graduating from Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg in 1887. He was born in 1860 in Maryland and died in 1952 in Washington, D.C., and is buried in Loudon Park Cemetery, in Baltimore, MD. In the early 1900s, Rev. Dr. Zimmerman was a made a member of the London Society of Science, Letters, and Art and was also elected to the Gettysburg College chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. In 1900 he was elected president of the Lutheran Synod in Maryland. He was a founder and president of the Lutheran Deaconess Motherhouse, vice president of the Board of Home Missions, and for 20 years was a member of the Board of Trustees of Gettysburg Theological Seminary. An interesting family. The photo is nice, but there are a few rough spots around the edges and corners. The postcard was addressed, stamped and postmarked, but I can't read the name of the town. Great for anyone researching the Zimmerman family. Postage will be 4.75 to the U. S. IF OUTSIDE THE U. S., PLEASE USE THE POSTAL CALCULATOR TO DETERMINE THE COST OF POSTAGE.
