Date: The piece is dates 1876 Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Size: The mug is ~3 1/2" in diameter at the base, ~4 3/4" diameter at the top, ~5 5/8" at its widest including the handle, and is ~4 1/4" high. The piece weighs slightly over one pound and one ounce. Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice unusual piece in size that is in very good condition after being around for over 150 years. A nice antique which would display very well in your collection of antique Pennsylvania redware. Condition: The Mug is in very good condition with no breaks, cracks, or hairlines. The glaze has crazing throughout that is difficult to see due to the coloring of the piece but is there. The piece has several shallow flea bites and flakes to the glaze along the top rim with a few minor flakes to the surface here and there. The one issue we see is a repair to the rim, which was done to the piece before it was fired, glazed, and refired as evidenced by the fact that it is glazed over and does not go through to the inside (see the last two photos). Finally, the piece also has some of the manufacturing defects you would expect in a primitive piece of redware of this vintage such as uneven spots, pops, slubs, areas where the glaze did not fully flow, and unglazed spots. This piece has a few of such issues. be that as it may, the piece is beautiful and would display very well in your collection. Please view photos for additional condition information.
