Description: Sold AS IS.This is an antique framed oil on wood panel. I do not see an artist's signature. It is heavy and weighs about 18 lbs with packing.Came from a NYC estate that had fine antiques and art which were mostly French. This painting looks like it is probably Continental, possibly Dutch, Flemish, etc., but it is hard to be sure.Outside measurements with frame about 21.25" high x 26.25" wide. Painting is about 18.5" high x 23" wide. There are some cracks in this very old panel which are apparent on the front and may have been repaired at some point in the past. There are many heavy horizontal and vertical wood strips on the back that reinforce and protect the painting. The strips look like mahogany, which would have been an expensive repair for a treasured painting. There is evidence of woodworm in the frame, another sign of age.The painting is antique, but I cannot give the age definitively. It is at least 19th century, possibly older. It is a version of a famous Flemish Old Master painting of Jacob and Rachel at the Well story from the Bible, Book of Genesis. On the right it depicts Jacob kissing Rachel. It is possibly Leah standing on the left. I love the sheep. The Jacob story is long and fascinating, and I give a few details here. Rebekah was told by God that she would give birth to twins (Jacob the younger and Esau the older), each of whom would found a great nation. By means of an elaborate double deception, Jacob managed to obtain the older Esau's birthright from their father. Jacob then fled and arrived at his uncle Laban's home in Haran, Mesopotamia, where he fell in love with his cousin Rachel. Laban promised Rachel's hand in marriage to Jacob, if Jacob would work for Laban for seven years. In an ironic twist of deception, Laban substituted his older daughter Leah for Rachel at the wedding ceremony. Jacob was compelled to work for Laban for another 7 years so that he could also marry Rachel.Later, Jacob wrestled with a mysterious stranger, a divine being, who changed Jacob's name to Israel. Jacob then met and was reconciled with Esau and settled in Canaan.Jacob had 13 children, 10 of whom were founders of tribes of Israel.8634
